This sweater is as rugged and good looking as my son who inspired it. Joe spends his winters ice climbing in the Montana mountains, so warmth is knit right into this design with a textural waffle stitch pattern worked in an aran weight wool yarn. Panels of contrasting garter rib travel up the sides and under the sleeves before joining to highlight the raglan shaping  that makes this such a comfortable sweater to wear. Knit bottom up in the round with no seams, this is a perfect sweater for a cold weather enthusiast!

The body and sleeves of the sweater are knit first then joined at the underarms. Raglan decreases are worked to the wide neck. The neckband is picked up and short rows worked to raise the back of the neck.

The pattern is appropriate for an intermediate knitter familiar with knitting in the round on circular needles and using dpns or any other small circumference circular method for the lower sleeves. Careful attention to keeping track of decreases is required. The pattern is 7 pages long with a full schematic and has been test knit and professionally tech edited to be clear and free of errors.

Sizes:
Men’s Sizes: S (M, L, 1X) (2X, 3X, 4X)

Finished Measurements:
Chest Circumference: 37 3/4 (41 3/4, 45 1/2, 49 1/4) (53, 58 1/4, 62) in/ 96 (106, 115.5, 125) (134.5, 148, 157.5) cm.

Sizing Notes:
This is an outdoor weight sweater designed to be worn over another layer and to have at least 2 – 4 in/ 5 -10 cm of positive ease. While the design is not gender specific, it was drafted using a men’s standard measurements chart. Compared to women’s standards for the same chest sizes, the sleeves, body, and armhole are longer and the sleeve circumference is larger. Because of the non-fitted style of the design, any gender can wear this handsome sweater with minor tweaks to their preferred lengths.

Gauge:
19 sts and 31 rnds in 4 in/ 10 cm in Waffle
Stitch Pattern in the Round as on page 2 of pattern.

Materials:

  • Briggs and Little Heritage (100% wool; 215 yds/196 m per 4 oz/113g skein); 7 (8, 9, 10) (11, 12, 13) skeins, sample shown in color: 22 Brown Heather, ***OR*** approximately 1424 (1639, 1828, 2016) (2204, 2446, 2688) yds/ 1302 (1499, 1672, 1843) (2015, 2237, 2458) m of aran or heavy worsted weight yarn.
  • Circular needles in a range of lengths from 16 in/ 40 cm up to 40 in/ 100 cm for smaller sizes and up to 60 in/ 150 cm for larger sizes, in size required to obtain gauge. I used US #5/ 3.75 mm. You may need a size or two above or below that.
  • 1 set of DPNs in same size as above, or use 32- 40 in/ 80 – 100 mm circular needle if you prefer magic loop technique.
  • 8 stitch markers – Choosing 4 in one color and 4 in another will help distinguish sleeve and body markers for the yoke directions.
  • 1 clip-on style end of round marker – different from all other markers.
  •  2 additional clip-on style markers if not included in your 8 markers.
  •  Scrap yarn to hold sts.
  •  Tapestry needle to sew in ends.
