Triple Crowner Headband

My models for this design are both “Triple Crowners” – hikers who have thru-hiked all three of America’s long distance trails: The Appalachian Trail, The Pacific Crest Trail, and The Continental Divide Trail. That’s a total of about 7,900 miles! Obviously a special handknit is in order, and this headband qualifies. It has a unique triple cable crossing that requires a bit of knitterly focus, and its handsome good looks work equally well for men and women – no matter how many miles they have hiked!

This design is appropriate for an intermediate knitter with experience cabling. The headband is worked in the round on a circular needle, and the triple cable crossing is worked with two cable needles. The cable directions are both charted and given as a written version for those who prefer. The pattern is two pages long and has been test knit and professionally tech edited to be clear and free of errors.

Sizes: Medium (X Large) to fit head circumferences of approximately 22 (24) in/ 56 (61) cm. Designed with 4 in/ 10 cm of negative ease. Stretchy enough that medium size fits most, depending on the snugness of fit desired. Both samples shown in medium.

Finished Measurements:
Circumference: 18 (19 1/2) in/ 45.5 (49.5) cm unstretched.
Height: 3 1/2 in/ 9 cm

Gauge: Choose a main needle that gives a gauge of 20 sts/ 28 rows/ 4 in/ 10 cm over a stockinette swatch worked back and forth.

What You Need:

1 1/2 (1 3/4) oz/ 43 (50) grams, approx. 115 (123) yards/ 106 (113) meters of worsted weight yarn. Samples shown in Valley Yarns Northampton, 100% wool, color 04 Chocolate, and Ella rae Classic, 100% wool, color 30.
