Playful Purls Reversible Hat

A little bit retro, a lot thick and cozy, and completely reversible – two hats in one! You need a little more yarn and a little more time to create this thick, cushy knit using a drop-stitch technique illustrated with a photo tutorial. A link to my video tutorial is given also so you can master this amazing reversible stitch pattern that makes great use of variegated yarn. A fun challenge!

This pattern is geared to intermediate knitters who are interested in learning what may be a new technique to them. The stitch pattern involves a drop stitch that takes a bit of focus – but only every 6 rounds. I’ve included a full photo tutorial as well as a link to a video I made demonstrating this technique. Once you’ve done a full round or two with the drop stitches you’ll be quite efficient at the moves (and feel very accomplished!) The pattern is 3 pages long including the photo tutorial. It has been professionally tech edited and fully test knit to be clear and free of errors.

Sizes: Adult Sizes: S/M (M/L). Note that this stitch pattern is very stretchy, making either size fit most adults depending on their fit preferences. Shown in size M/L worn with 2 in/ 5 cm negative ease.

Finished Measurements: Circumference: 19 (21) in/ 48 (53.5) cm
Height with brim not folded: 10 (11) in/ 25.5 (28) cm

Gauge: 18 3/4 sts and 42 rnds per 4 in/ 10 cm over st pattern. Gauge is difficult to measure over stitch pattern – choose a needle size that gives you approx. 5 sts/in over a stockinette swatch.

What You Need:

  • Malabrigo Rios (Merino superwash; 210 yds/ 192 m per 3.5 oz/100g skein); 2 (2) skeins. Sample shown in color 809, “Solis”, OR 230 (277) yds/ 211 (254) m of a similar worsted weight yarn. Note: For S/M size, weigh your skein of Rios before deciding if you really need 2. Above amounts include a 5% safety factor – you may just need one skein.
  • 16 in/40 cm circular needle in size required to obtain gauge. I used a US #5/ 3.75 mm. You may need a size or two above or below that.
  • one set of dpns in same size as above.
  • one stitch marker
  • large eyed tapestry needle
