Sea Smoke Hat

Who says you can’t have a little vintage glamour on a frosty day? This hat has a lacy side fan knit right into the ribbing. Add a special button and pair with my Sea Smoke Scarf (pattern sold separately) to face winter with style.

This pattern is appropriate for an intermediate level knitter. The hat is worked from the crown in the round on double pointed needles before switching to an optional circular. The drop lace fan is worked separately and then its stitches are worked together with the ribbing section of the hat near the brim.

This pattern has been professionally tech edited and thoroughly test knit to be clear and free of errors.

Sizes:
Adult sizes S(M,L) ,to fit head circumferences of 21 (22, 23) in/ 53.5 (56, 58.5) cm.

Finished measurements:
Circumference: 17 ½ (18, 19) in/ 48.5 (51, 53.5) cm
Height: 7.5 (8, 8.5) in/ 19 (20, 21.5) cm, when measured from brim to crown while lying flat.
Note: This hat is designed to fit closely, with quite a bit of negative ease. For a looser hat, choose a larger size.

Gauge:
22 sts/4in over stockinette stitch worked in the round.
It’s a good idea to check your gauge in the round.

Materials:
• 1 (2, 2) 1.75 oz/50g skeins (each approx. 189yds/175m) of Berroco “Flicker”, 87% baby alpaca, 8% acrylic, 5% other fibers. Shown in color #3305. Or 189 (199, 216) yds/ 173(182, 198) meters of a similar worsted weight yarn. The alpaca yarn is light and stretchy as required for the negative ease. Keep this in mind if you substitute another yarn.

Note: While one skein of Berroco Flicker is enough for the small size hat, the medium and large sizes fall just over the maximum yardage when adding the usual 10% to be safe. If you are planning on knitting both the hat and scarf, you can easily do both with three skeins in any of the sizes.

• One set of four or five double pointed needles in size required to obtain gauge. I used US# 8 /5mm. You may need a size or two above or below that.
• Optional 16 in circular needle in same size.
• tapestry needle, stitch marker, stitch holder or scrap yarn
• One button
